VP Unveils Gazetted Copies Of Cape Town Convention Practice Directions, IDERA
Vice President Kashim Shettima yesterday unveiled the Gazetted copies of the Cape Town Convention Practice Directions and Irrevocable Deregistration and Export Request Authorization (IDERA).
The occasion was the conference on “Convention Of International Interests In Mobile Equipment And The Protocol On Matters Specific To Aircraft Equipment” organized by the Federal Ministry of Aviation & Aerospace Development in collaboration with Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
Shettima was represented at the event by the Minister of Aviation & Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo (SAN).
In his speech, Keyamo said most African countries do not have privately owned commercial airlines and so, “in Nigeria, we have the pleasure of having private operators,” adding that “their survival is directly linked to the survival of the aviation sector in Nigeria.”
He explained that the policy shift of the government from the practice of looking outside to the policy of supporting local capacity was informed by commitment to righting the wrongs of the past that saw over 100 Nigerian airlines collapse within 40 years, stating that government is unapologetic about fully supporting the growth of local airlines. This he said, is the reason for unlocking the international market on aircraft leasing to give them access to dry lease opportunities rather than over-burdening wet lease arrangements.
In his welcome address, the Acting Director General of NCAA, Capt. Chris Najomo said the NCAA had on October 16, 2024, issued an advisory circular, explaining to stakeholders requirements and involvements in implementation.
In his Goodwill Message, Chairman of Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator Abdulfatai Buhari stressed the need for all stakeholders to work together towards putting the country’s image where it should be.
