Requirements For Aviation Hub Status, By Uriesi

The Chief Executive Officer of Ibom Air Limited, Mr. George Uriesi says the ability of airlines to provide connectivity for passengers is a critical element in achieving a hub status.

Uriesi was speaking at a panel session during the Quarter1 Business Breakfast Meeting of Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative (ASRTI) held last Thursday at Golfview Hotels, Ikeja, Lagos, under the theme, “Building MMIA Into A Safe & Economically Viable Hub.”

Uriesi said to attain this hub status, it is necessary to provide the required  infrastructure for good airport passenger experience while airlines should be able to provide connectivity at different points.

“The service must also match the infrastructure,” he said, stressing that a hub is not just an airport but a point where 20 to 25% of passengers that use the airport are transit passengers.

He cited Lome Airport in Togo which has 97% of passengers as transit passengers and has recorded passenger increase from 350,000 passengers of 2009 to over one million passengers in 2025.
