MMIA Fire Incident: The Airspace Is Safe, Says NAMA Boss
The Managing Director of Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Engr. Farouk Ahmed Umar has reassured the flying public that air-to-ground operations at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos will remain uninterrupted while the airspace remains safe for operations despite the fire incident that damaged some air-to-ground equipment at the airport on February 23, 2026.
Speaking yesterday while inspecting areas affected by the fire, Umar said though the air-to-ground equipment at the airport was completely damaged, the back-up facility in place has helped to ensure that flights are uninterrupted.
Umar equally inspected the areas mapped out for the mobile control tower that has been acquired, stating that “from what I have seen so far, the Chinese firm has done well in preparing the ground for the mobile tower.”
“We are ready to receive the new mobile tower,” he said, commending efforts of the Director of Operations and other personnel that were on ground to quell the fire..
Minister of Aviation & Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN) had on Tuesday, disclosed that some new mobile control towers had been acquired and were on their way to the country.
