GTP To Offer Scholarships To Female Students For Transport Studies, 2025
The Chairman, Chief Consultant of Global Transport Policy, Dr. Oluwasegun Musa, says the organization “will be offering at least, 10 scholarships to secondary school female students who are interested in transport related studies from next year.”
Delivering his welcome speech at the GTP Women In Transport Conference held in Lagos under the theme, Mindset Plus Skillset: Championing Inclusive Agenda For Women In The Nigerian Transport Industry, Musa said the conference intended to break barriers by challenging stereotypes and biases, build capacity by enhancing skills and knowledge, promote entrepreneurship by fostering women led businesses and foster inclusive policies by advocating for gender-sensitive legislation.
It is a clarion call for the Federal Government to drive women participation in governance, legislation and critical stakeholder engagement. We are here to champion this bold move as and deepen this conversation with a bigger and more inclusive platform with global actors next year like UNO, IMO, ILO, and more,” he said.
He further noted that women comprise only 12% of Nigeria’s transport workforce according to International Labour Organization (ILO). 75% of women face discrimination in the industry according to Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS). Female entrepreneurship in transportation can increase Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 10% according to McKinsey. 80% of women in transport report lack of confidence as a major obstacle according to World Bank. 90% of women in STEM fields cite role models as inspiration according to UN Women. 70% of transport jobs require technical skills according to International Transport Forum while women with technical skills earn 30% more than those without according to World Economic Forum.
