FAAN Training School Launches Advanced Waste Management Training To Drive Circular Economy Agenda
Following the recent launch of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN)’s Circular Economy initiative, the FAAN Training School will today, commence a specialized training programme for 40 staff members to embed sustainable waste management practices across Nigeria’s airports.
The training, titled “Understanding Sustainability in Airport Operations and Modern Waste Management Challenges,” is designed to translate the Authority’s environmental sustainability vision into actionable competencies for staff.
The training follows last week’s commissioning of colour-coded indoor waste bins by the Managing Director/Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs Olubunmi Onabanjo-Kuku, where she reinforced the Authority’s commitment to building greener, more sustainable airports.
According to the General Manager, Training, Dr Oluwatoyin Akinlade, the programme is structured around the Triple Bottom Line framework, People, Planet, Profit, to drive impact across the organization. The training aims to deliver operational efficiency through the implementation of efficient waste management systems and resource conservation across FAAN’s 24/7 airport operations.
“The programme also seeks to align FAAN operations with environmental requirements of the Federal Ministry of Environment, the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), and FAAN’s own regulations,” she said. “Additionally, it focuses on minimizing environmental impacts including waste generation, air and water pollution, carbon emissions, and resource depletion, while equipping staff to adopt sustainable practices that enhance social wellbeing and maintain economic viability.”
She added that the training directly supports FAAN management’s environmental sustainability agenda through the “PLANET” pillar of the Triple Bottom Line and that it teaches staff to minimize environmental impacts as a core sustainability goal, covering practical areas such as recycling programmes, renewable energy adoption, efficient waste management, water conservation, and biodiversity protection.
“With airports generating significant environmental impacts through energy consumption, water usage, waste, emissions, and noise, the training defines sustainability as minimizing those impacts while conserving resources. The programme ensures that sustainability moves from policy to daily airport operations, translating management’s vision into practical competencies for staff,” Dr Akinlade said.
