Weather Stakeholders Discuss Risk Management Of Aeronautical Meteorology For Aviation

Integrating aeronautical meteorology into climate risk management for aviation was part of the focus at the two-day NiMET Stakeholders’ Forum that ended in Lagos yesterday under the theme, Early Warnings: Raising Awareness On Climate Risks.
The second day of the event organized by Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET), opened with a knowledge-sharing presentation by Nouni Nabel of the Moroccan General Directorate of Meteorology on the experiences of National Meteorological Services. This was followed by an overview of NiMet’s Weather Forecasting Services delivered by Prof. Vincent Weli, Director of Weather Forecasting Services, which set the stage for a robust panel session.
The session showcased NiMet’s proficiencies in weather forecasting through a rich array of topics, including advancing weather forecasting through numerical modelling and Artificial Intelligence, enhancing data quality and operational efficiency through Quality Management Systems, the role of NiMet in air quality monitoring for public safety, public weather forecasting as a tool for early warning and early action and integrating aeronautical meteorology into climate risk management for aviation.
Stakeholders were further exposed to partnership opportunities with NiMet through a presentation titled “Unlocking Opportunities Through NiMet Public-Private Partnership: A Case Study on Digital Climate Advisory Services (DCAS) to Smallholder Farmers.”
The day closed with an enlightening session by the Legal Department, which clarified the scope of NiMet’s Establishment Act and provided guidance on how stakeholders can engage with and plug into the Agency’s mandate.
