Robust Digital Platform, Logistics Policy Required For Nigeria’s Air Cargo Growth, Says Jibodu

The Acting Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Murtala Muhammed Airport Two (MMA2), managed by Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited, Mr. Remi Jibodu says Nigeria needs policy and regulatory reforms featuring development of a national cargo logistics policy and needs to build very robust digital platform, a marketplace where airline can sell cargo to customers as is done to passengers in order to grow the air cargo and logistics sector, using technology.

In his presentation during a panel session titled How E-Commerce Is Shaping The Future Of Logistics In Africa, made at the 5th CHINET AviaCargo Conference held at Eko Hotel, Jibodu identified air cargo missing link in Nigeria as weak digital presence and poor e-commerce integration, fragmentation of players and processes, low market awareness of air cargo services, inadequate infrastructure and weak cold-chain systems, regulatory complexities consisting of multiple agencies with overlapping roles, limited dedicated freight capacity and challenges involved in balancing cost, speed, transparency and reliability.

Apart from building of robust digital platforms as strategic solution to these challenges, he called for establishment of modern warehousing and consolidation centres, stakeholder collaboration by fostering partnerships, developing infrastructure by encouraging Private Public Partnerships inveestments for airport cargo, policy and regulatory reforms and fleet capacity development.

He stressed the need to encourage financial institutions to create cargo specific aircraft financing products, incentivize investment in dedicated freighter aircraft and explore P3 approach for cargo fleet development.

According to Jibodu, Nigeria’s population is 237.5 million in 2025 with internet penetration of 14.78%, having 105.7 million users according to Nigeria Communication Commission, with mobile teledensity of 76.65% (169.3 million active subscribers).

Nigeria is Africa’s largest mobile market with e-commerce value estimated at US$9.35 billion in 2025, projected to reach US$16.8 billion by 2030 with growing CAGR of 12.5%.

There is need to embrace technology, investing in capacity and reforming policies.
