President Tinubu’s 30% Waiver For Airlines’ Debt Yet To Be implemented, Says AON
The Spokesperson of Airline Operators Of Nigeria (AON), Dr. Obiora Okonkwo says the 30% waiver approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for debts owed aviation agencies by airlines is yet to be implemented.
Speaking at the 30th Annual Conference of the League of Airport & Aviation Correspondents (LAAC), held at Providence Hotel, Lagos under the theme, Towards A Sustainable Aviation Industry: Balancing Government Revenue Demands With Sector Growth, Okonkwo said the reason the operators have been given for this delay is that the directive is yet to be gazetted.
Speaking on the 5% Ticket Sales Charge (TSC) that led to picketing of airlines by aviation unions in the month of August, Okonkwo said “the call for removal of this 5% TSC must not stop” to enable airlines have smooth operations.
In his presentation, the Vice Chairman of AON, Dr. Allen Onyema called for a review of the numerous charges that airlines pay to agencies.
“I remember when ECOWAS came together. Even our president signed a treaty on behalf of ECOWAS calling for a 25% reduction in taxes across West Africa. That has not been implemented anywhere yet,” he said.
