Port Harcourt Airport Targets 20% Revenue Increase, 15% Operational Cost Reduction
Obafemi Jerimiah Awolowo Airport at Omagua, Port Harcourt intends to increase revenue generation by 20% over the next three years and reduce operational costs by 15% through efficiency measures as part of its sustainability and economic goals and objectives.
The Airport Manager and Regional Manager, South South/South East, Mrs. Ifesinachi Ezike (JP) disclosed this while presenting the sustainability and financial liability business plan for the international airport at the 9th Airport Business Summit and Expo held in Lagos on August 20 to 22, 2024 under the Theme: “Airport Viability is Key to Successful Aviation Business Ambition.”
She said the airport was also targeting reduced carbon emissions by 20% within five years, achievement of 3% waste diversion rate through recycling, implementation of renewable energy solutions covering 20% of energy needs, enhanced community engagement and creation of 200 new jobs in the next five years.
Ezike said the airport which handles approximately one million passengers annually, serving both domestic and international routes, generated N2,141,273,717.79 as revenue in 2021, N6,063,536,133.37 between January and July 2024 and N16,828,652,915.16 from 2021 to July 2024, adding that “the airport is situated in Omagwa sub-urb of oil rich state of Rivers state with a landmass of 2687 hectares. It was commissioned for operations in 1978 and was upgraded to status of international airport in 1984. Over the years, the airport has undergone several phases of expansion and modernization to accommodate increasing passenger traffic and cargo volumes.”
She said Port Harcourt International Airport (PHIA) “is strategically positioned to play a pivotal role in the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM),” adding that “the prospect of transforming Port Harcourt International Airport into air transport Hub in East Africa is a function of the success of the airport’s sustainability and viability plan which hinges heavily on collective action.”
Mrs. Ezike won the prize for the best presentation at the All Nigeria Airport Managers Business Forum competition, which made a debut at the event.
