NiMet To Develop Irrigation Requirements For River Basins, Gets World Bank Commendation

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) says it plans to develop detailed irrigation requirements for river basins across the country to help Improve access to irrigation and drainage services, increase yields and strengthen agricultural service delivery in Nigeria.
The Director General/CEO of NiMet, Prof. Mansur Bako Matazu who disclosed this during the signing of an MoU between NiMet and the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, said the agency had been working in synergy with the Ministry since the inception of the project, which has informed the Signing of Memorandum of Understanding.
He added that the integration and adequate use of weather and climate information into the design of the project would aid mitigate siltation, water logging, and also provide hydrological ratio for irrigation requirements.
In his remarks, Engr. Kenneth Sunmonu, the Water Resources Component Manager of the TRIMING Project, which represented the Federal Ministry of Water Resources said NiMet’s key role in climate information generation and agro-meteorological services has been recognized by the World Bank in the implementation of the Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria (TRIMING) Project.
He applauded the agency’s commitment to quality climate services and access to hydro-meteorology data which is visible in the establishment of the world class Automated Weather Observation Station (AWOS) across the Nation.
