NiMET Director General Wants NiMET To Leverage On Ai

The Director General of Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET), Prof. Charles Anosike has said “NIMET should leverage on Artificial Intelligence and advanced satellite data to create to ensure the flight safety and regularity” as part of technological integration towards the future.

In his speech at the occasion of the World Meteorological Day 2026 held at NiMET headquarters in Abuja, under the theme, “Observing Today, Protecting Tomorrow,” Anosike who noted that the theme “resonates deeply with the core mission of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority” said “in this dynamic sector, “observing” isn’t just a scientific exercise, it is the very foundation of every takeoff, every landing, and every mile flown in between.

Aviation and Meteorology have always been inseparable partners. Our professionals in the meteorological services provide the “eyes” that allow us to navigate the invisible complexities of our atmosphere.

The theme “Observing Today” reminds us that the safety of our skies depends on real-time, high-precision data. From detecting microbursts and wind shear at our airports to monitoring clear-air turbulence at 35,000 feet. These critical data allow our pilots, aerodrome operators and air traffic controllers make life saving decisions quickly and with precision.

“Protecting Tomorrow”, in my view, is where our greatest opportunities lie. As at 2026, we are witnessing a climate that is shifting more rapidly than ever before. Extreme weather events are no longer outliers; they are becoming part of our operational baseline.”

He further stated that as part of enhancing resilience, “NIMET is expected to invest in weather-resilient infrastructure to ensure our airports remain operational during extreme heatwaves and storms.”
