MMIA Terminal 1: FAAN, CCECC Mark Completion Of Land-Side Bridge Concrete Works

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), in collaboration with the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and project consultant, ARUP, today marked a significant milestone in the ongoing rehabilitation and modernization of Terminal 1 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
The milestone was marked by the final concrete pouring for the inbound and outbound landside bridges, effectively connecting the entire bridge structure from its starting point to its endpoint.
The occasion, attended by the Managing Director/Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, alongside key FAAN directors, representatives of CCECC and ARUP, provided an opportunity to physically demonstrate the steady progress being recorded on the Terminal 1 upgrade.
Speaking at the event, the FAAN MD/CE described the milestone as another important step in moving the project “from plans to visible delivery,” noting that the transformation of Terminal 1 is increasingly becoming tangible for Nigerians and international travellers.
She expressed appreciation to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo (SAN), for their leadership, support and commitment to the successful delivery of the project.
The FAAN MD/CE also acknowledged the efforts of CCECC, ARUP, FAAN’s technical teams and other stakeholders whose collective work continues to drive the project forward.
The event was deliberately kept as a modest media engagement to showcase the progress and traction being achieved on the project to the public, stakeholders, skeptics and the world at large, while providing visible evidence of the Federal Government’s ongoing investment in the transformation of Nigeria’s premier international gateway.
FAAN, however, clarified that today’s milestone does not signify the immediate opening of the bridges for use. The occasion marks the completion of the concrete works. The newly poured concrete will undergo the necessary curing period, after which lighting and other finishing works will be completed in the coming weeks.
The landside bridges are expected to become operational in December 2026, in line with the anticipated completion of the façade and other exterior works of Terminal 1.
The rehabilitation and modernization of Terminal 1 is part of the Federal Government’s broader effort to upgrade airport infrastructure, enhance passenger experience and position Nigeria’s airports to meet the demands of a modern and increasingly connected aviation environment.
