African Union Wants Aviation Infrastructure Modernization Prioritized

The Chairperson of African Union (AU) Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf says modernizing aviation infrastructure gaps and addressing them in Africa should become a continental priority.

Speaking at the just concluded African Air Transport & Convention Expo held in Lome, Togo, June 15 to June 19th, 2026, Youssouf, who was represented by MME Lerato Mataboge said particular attention should be given to aviation infrastructure to ensure that modern demands are met.

“We must accelerate a seamless African airspace,” she said, adding that objective should be a progressive integrated African airspace, capable of attracting the growing passenger and cargo traffic.

She also emphasized that digital integration must be accelerated across the aviation ecosystem.

“We must invest in manpower. As aviation becomes increasingly digital, our workforce must evolve. For Africa to win, we must invest in our people immediately, not later,” she said.
