Enugu Airport Exceeds Half Year Revenue Target For 2024
The General Manager, South East and Airport Manager, Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, Mr. Hilary Umunna says in the first half of 2024, the airport “successfully generated ₦1,706,162,638.56, exceeding the target given for the half year of ₦1.7 Billion” adding that “despite limited infrastructural facilities available, in the year 2023, we generated the sum of ₦1,996,080,267.04, representing 93% achievement of the set target of ₦ 2 billion for the 2023 financial year for the Airport.”
Umunna disclosed this while presenting a paper on the airport’s viable and sustainable investment opportunities and financial achievements at the 9th Airport Business Summit and Expo held in Lagos on August 20 to 22, 2024 under the Theme: “Airport Viability is Key to Successful Aviation Business Ambition.”
He said the airport recorded a total passenger movement of 420,762 in 2023, featuring 207,490 arrivals and 213,272 departures. From January to July 2024, total passenger movement had reached 195, 691 while total aircraft movement had reached 2,486.
In the last quarter of 2023, total revenue was N 1,996,080,267.04. Half year 2024 revenue had reached N 1,706,162,792.61. First quarter 2024 revenue was N930,970,319.28 while second quarter revenue was N775,192,319.28.
Umunna said the airport “is uniquely positioned to serve as a critical hub within the Single Africa Air Transport Market (SAATM) initiative, particularly for the Central African region. With proximity to key countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Congo, and the Central African Republic (CAR), our airport has the potential to facilitate enhanced connectivity across these nations. By providing efficient and reliable air transport services, we can streamline the movement of passengers and goods, thereby boosting trade and economic cooperation in the region. Our vision is to emerge as a subregional hub, where these neighboring countries can access a centralized point for both regional and international travel. This strategic positioning not only aligns with the objectives of SAATM but also strengthens our role in fostering regional integration, economic development, and closer ties among these Central African nations.”
He added that the airport was known as the gateway to the South Eastern States of Nigeria, situated on the only Coal belt in Nigeria and was commissioned on the 22nd of October, 1976 by the then Chief of Staff Supreme Headquarters Brigadier, Shehu Musa Yar’adua.
“Enugu Airport operates Domestic and International Flights (Ethiopian Airlines) connecting to other countries, four times a week. The Airport was renamed Akanu Ibiam International Airport in July 2004 by Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s Administration, after an illustrious son and former Governor of Eastern Nigeria Late Dr. Akanu Ibiam. The airport was made a regional headquarters on 31st January 2024 by the Honorable Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo (SAN). Enugu Airport performs the intermediary role of coordinating the operations of the other airports in the region,” he explained.
